There have been several different races and series in which the AE86 has reigned in, but there is one series that has become legendary for this lightweight FR platform. This series was called the N2 category. The N2 regulations were known as “special touring car regulations'' which allowed more modifications that could be done to the vehicle. One of these modifications that were distinct to the N2 category are the aggressive over fenders. The N2 fenders have been a popular form of aero parts for AE86 enthusiasts and still are to this day. The original N2 fenders were designed to allow a wider 14'' wheel to fit this car. Fast forwarding to modern times, the selection of high performance tires in 14'' have diminished. Most AE86 owners have gone the 15'' route due to the availability of high performance tires, but owners of N2 AE86s were having problems fitting 15'' wheels in the rear due to the 80s design that originally were meant to accommodate 14'' wheels. To satisfy the needs of the hardcore AE86 N2 enthusiast, Aki Okada who is famous in Japan for his Sprinter Trueno, teamed up with Body Shop Aotani to create a limited edition rear fender. This rear fender started off originally as a one-off for Mr. Okada based upon the original TRD N2 fender. The main difference of this new fender is the extension to allow 15'' wheels fit without aesthetically destroying the balance of the original N2 look. As of now, there are only 6 Hachiroku’s in Japan with this fender. The Bodyshop Aotani N2 fenders are an exclusive item only for the true and fast AE86 N2 owners which have proven themselves to Mr. Okada. Shu Namiki’s Toyota Corolla Levin is one of the six. Using a 1985 Corolla Levin for a base, the exterior received the full N2 aero parts fitted to the original koki (late model) front bumper. There is an addition of a large GT wing mounted to the TRD style rear spoiler. This functioning high mount GT wing adds traction through down force and pushes the body to the ground via a one-off sub frame made for this application. The headlights are OG koki Levin complete with the black trim and the tail lights are also correct for this year 3 door Levin. Even his license plate is 86. This car is not only a purpose built track car, but it is a legally registered purpose built track car. The modern day N2 look is completed with a set of discontinued 15'' SSR Formula Mesh in a super-wide, super-deep size. Mr. Namiki’s Levin follows along the old school N2 theme in the motor also. By swapping out the old 80s designed EFI system for a dual Mikuni Solex 44mm carburetor set up, he has simplified yet effectively increased throttle response and ease of tuning. The motor is based on the AE86 model 4valve 4A-GEU built with AE92 4A-GEU rods and crankshaft plus track proven Toda camshafts and pistons. For the interior, Mr. Namiki stayed with the standard-issue-for-hachiroku Bride and Nardi. Various aftermarket gauges have been swapped out for the factory cluster. Do not be surprised to find US made parts on true grassroots track/street cars in Japan. When it comes down to what works, there is no discrimination by country of origin for the parts.
