Dogboxed Pug 106
Often cars are described to handle like they’re on rails, this one makes a train handle like it’s on tyres. When packed with two drivers in full race kit it weighs in at a smidge over a ton, less than the kerb weight of most of the cars it competes against.
This phenomenal light weight, paired with the roll cage, stiff sport suspension and race tyres makes this little Pug more nimble than a featherweight boxer.
The custom geared dog box helps out the stock 1.3L motor get all of its 100whp to the ground as quickly as possible, while this seems like a tiny figure it certainly goes like a cut cat. The ability to flat shift reduces acceleration time even more, all of these traits are vital in the Targa NZ rallies that it is regularly raced in.
This particular 106 was one of 30 originally imported into New Zealand to compete in the One Make race series from 1994 to 1997.
It also competed in the 2002 Nurburgring 24 hour race, finishing third in its class, behind two Works VW Polos. All in all, this is a very unique car with quite a bit of history to its name.
