Dodge Omni GLH

Love for automotive has no limits, the pursuit of that dream car is volatile. One thing I love about the tuning world is when someone builds something totally unexpected of what it was supposed to be. I will never forget back then when my friends and I mess with our cars and one of my friend’s dad dad would observe us and comment; ” Japanese engineers spent millions in research and development to build that car and here you are boys messing with it.”

I love how an economy car delivering tofu in Japan could be a glorified mountain pass racer. Meanwhile, here in the US, a Texas born hot-rod tuning legend named Carroll Shelby picked one of the least desirable cars as his project; a Dodge Omni. The builder was famous for building Ford Mustangs but not everyone knows that he also had collaborations with Chrysler-Dodge and built limited edition Chargers and Omnis.

The Omni was cramp, it was slow, it can be compared to a lawnmower, it was basically a disposable crappy car; which to Carroll was perfect project that needed some recognition.

The car was was modified; the 2.2 4cyl was boosted which bumped up the power to 170+ HP. The suspension was tightened and it was given a black exterior paint. The little Dodge was called the Omni GLH which stands for “Goes Like Hell”.

Not everyone liked it, it was still small, uncomfortable, it was stiff, and it handled like a go-kart…ugh really? that’s a ricer’s checklist. LOL. Even with all it’s short comings, the Omni GLH was was no push over. It can smoke a Ford Mustang GT, a Camaro IROC-Z and a Ferrari 3.2 Mondial.

A ricer’s gratification of beating and paying a fraction of the cars mentioned above is already worth the money. It was definitely an 80′s hot hatch, a game changing classic for Dodge built and designed by the Hot Rod Legend himself, Mr. Carroll Shelby. He saw potential in the little dodge hatch and gave it his personal touch. Mr. Shelby’s contribution to the automotive tuning world is uncanny and definitely will be missed.
