Tyres are about as exciting as the annual Botswana 26-mile snail endurance race. The only time the radial rubber hoops spring into action is when they are being burned out and great plumes of white smoke engulf the car in a thick rubbery fog.
Over the years it would have taken a keen eye (or a bucket load of geeky knowledge) to spot the changes in tyre development, as they have pretty much remained round and rubbery through out the ages.
Until now… Thanks to the boff’s at Michelin the new tyre, or ‘Tweel’ as the firm have dubbed it could change the platform of air and rubber in the future.
No longer will you get flat tyres. Neither will thieves fear Police stingers, as these new bad boys won’t ever go flat or get punctured.
The Tweel does have a tread that will need to be replaced, but according to the firm they will last three times longer than the ones we have now. The tweels’ tread is connected to a wheel with what looks like straws and elastic bands as opposed to using a sidewall
Wacky or clever? This could be a new future for the rubber-fascinated community …
