Mopar 8.4-liter V10 crate engine with 800 hp
Mopar has introduced a new 8.4-liter V10 crate engine at SEMA.
Specifically designed for drag racing, the engine is hand assembled and features an aluminum block, a forged steel crankshaft and a JTEC controller. Thanks to these changes, the mill develops 800 hp (597 kW / 811 PS) and 695 lb-ft (941 Nm) of torque.
If that sounds like over kill, Mopar has also unveiled a new high-output version of the Gen III 426 HEMI V8. Producing 590 hp (440 kW / 598 PS), the engine weighs 100 lbs (45 kg) less than its predecessor and has cast aluminum valve covers, billet fuel rails and a revised windage tray to "provide excellent oil dispersion."
In related news, Dodge introduced a Challenger body-in-white which is described as an "excellent starting point for [building] a race car." Stripped of all non-essential equipment, the shell allows chassis builders to get right to work rather than spending hours removing parts from a standard production vehicle.
