Lancia ECV
When it comes to rally cars, I think of Sega Rally. Sega Rally was my early introduction to Rally racing. Popular cars used were the Subarus, Mitsus, Celicas, and the Lancia Deltas. Lancia, a popular brand in racing, but not in regular city driving, created a hot hatch prior to the Integrale, It was called the ECV;built to compete in the Group S division. The ECV (Experimental Composite Vehicle) was built from a Delta S4 chasis with heavy modifications.
It was equipped with a “Triflux” engine that produced over 600hp from a twin turbo 1759cc. The car was built with Kevlar and carbon fiber to reduce weight totaling to only 2,050 lbs.
The most interesting thing about this car would be it’s “triflux” engine. The cylinder-head had crossed exhaust and inlet valves, with an exhaust manifolds on each side of the cylinder-head, each feeding a single turbocharger
The use of two relatively smaller turbochargers reduced their inertia, hence spin-up and turbo-lag were reduced. Unfortunately under Group S regulations, cars were limited to only produce 300hp to limit speed. Definitely another hot hatch produced by Lancia. Maybe weird looking but it would probably kick-ass if it was released from it’s cage to compete. Thanks to the ECV, the Lancia Delta was born to race under the Group A category.
