Diesel-powered M5 is slated for launch in the spring of next year

The Detroit Bureau is reporting that BMW sources are saying that the tentatively named BMW 550dXM is definitely slated for a debut next spring.

The 550dXM will be coming from BMW's M division and will represent a diesel M5. The report says the 3.0 liter, tri-turbo diesel unit will deliver somewhere between 500 PS (368 kW / 493 bhp) and 550 PS (405 kW / 543 bhp) with a torque rating exceeding the 680 Nm (502 lb-ft) of torque of the current gasoline-powered M5.

But BMW M division's global marketing manager, Brian Watts, won't yet confirm the model is a sure go, although, he admits the automaker is considering the option.

According to BMW Blog, who's sister site Bimmer Today cites sources inside the company, BMW will introduced a tri-turbo diesel power plant next spring in the facelifted X6 model.

The new diesel unit will displace 3.0 liters, be fitted with a triple turbocharger system, and have an output of between 350 PS (258 kW / 345 bhp) and 400 PS (294 kW / 395 bhp). It will first be introduced in the X6 xDrive50d model which will debut in March 2012.

The new diesel unit will also make it into the facelifted 2012 7-Series next year, a model expected to debut later this year. The 750d will also be offered with xDrive (all-wheel-drive system) and in an extended wheelbase variant designated the 750Ld.

New triple-turbo diesel unit capable of making up to 400 PS (294 kW / 395 bhp)

BMW will be making the most of its new 3.0 liter, tri-turbo diesel unit as BMW Blog now reports the engine will be available in the 5-Series too.

The M550dx nomenclature came from a leaked supplier form for a model we have not seen before. The M-Sport Package 5-Series diesel (with xDrive) will likely feature around 400 PS (294 kW / 395 bhp) to maintain output at around the same level as the 550i (407 PS).

The new tri-turbo diesel, though, will first be introduced in the X6 xDrive50d model which will debut in March 2012. It will also be featured in the upcoming, facelifted 2012 7-Series in the 750d variant.
