The engine oil has to serve manifold purposes: Beyond the reliable lubrication of all glide and bearing areas, it has to lead away heat from those areas which are thermically highly stressed, ensure cleanness inside the engine and help to keep up a sealing between the piston and cylinder. Thereby, the oil is exposed to high temperatures and pressures which, with the increased distance driven, lower both its quality and level.
Therefore, it is mentioned in the owner's manual that the oil consumption for new modern engines can be up to 1l per 1000 km.
For the lubrication of the upper piston rings, a thin oil film has to remain at the cylinder walls and must be "sacrificed" - it burns off together with the fuel and gets lost for the oil sump volume. It is only a minimum amount of oil per stroke and cylinder, but with longer distances driven, it sums up to full liters.
To provide effective lubrication and cooling for internal engine parts, all internal combustion engines use some oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine and may change over the life of the engine.
Engines tend to use more oil during the break-in period than they do afterward, when oil consumption has stabilized. Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the oil quality as well as viscosity, engine speed (rpm), outside temperature, road conditions, the amount of oil dilution caused by condensed water or fuel residue, and oxidation of the oil.
Oil consumption may increase with engine wear over time, until replacement of worn engine parts may become necessary.
We urge you to check the engine oil level at regular intervals, preferably every time you fill the fuel tank, and always before a long trip. Keep in mind that accurate measurement of oil consumption requires great care and may take some time. Your Volkswagen dealer and our importer have instructions for how to measure oil consumption accurately.
